White noise problem

9 years 2 months ago - 9 years 2 months ago #189 by shanemikel
I just finished putting the pedal together, adjusted the trimmer all the way down, and now I have an equal volume level with bypass, as I do without it. I'm trying to consider the source of the white noise I'm hearing. Perhaps there was a step I missed to ground the pedal? What are your suggestions? I put the reverb effect on it, and it sounds good aside from the noise.

EDIT-IRRELEVANT[P.S. I'm using a tube amp.]

EDIT
(MORE DETAIL)

I have visually inspected for shorts, and I don't see any; also i've tried with AC power as well as USB power.

I've tried all the .ino programs in github, and I think I have some information that could help detect the problem:

After trying the metronome pedal, I noticed that with the volume turned up, and pass through enabled, I can still here a very low volume beep through my amp.

Please give as much detail as possible if you are thinking of giving me advice, as I am VERY inexperienced in working with electronic hardware.

EDIT
(UPDATE)

I've tried the sinewave program, and I'm happy to report that there is no noise there, so the output stage must be okay.. Still, I have no idea how to fix this...

EDIT
(UPDATE)

Okay, I found the other threads about the background noise problem, so perhaps I didn't make a mistake in building it. I'm wondering now if anybody has followed any of the suggestions in the other threads with some success.

It kind of sounds like I'm playing guitar in an airplane

some background hissing is there, but is not as playing under a snow storm :woohoo:
check the audio samples we have on soundcloud , they have no noise filtering of makeup at all, so your pedal must sound at least as good as that samples. If you have any doubt you can also send a close up pic of your pedal to our email account.

The first thing I would try is to use a different power supply, they make a big difference.

The input trimmer resistor could help as well, try to adjust it better.

Okay, I wasn't sure to post this as a response to my own thread, or the one in the software section.., but one must choose!

I have recorded a sample of the white noise with my recording interface, and the usual amount of gain I use when recording clean this way. I'm going to attach my audio sample as a FLAC, as well as some data I used Audacity to get, so y'all can make your own analysis if you choose.
[EDIT] audio file (in FLAC or compressed as MP3) too large to upload, so here's a link:

I'm pretty convinced that It's just the amount of gain I'm using, and the actual pedal noise is no different than the noise others are complaining about.

The raw data from which this graph is generated is attached as spectrum.txt

The best I've done so far is use a graphic EQ to bring 20k down by 20db, 7k down by 10db, and 160-400Hz down by 3-6db. This helps with the high-pitch ring and doesn't do too much damage as far as I can tell to the guitar signal. I'm still left with a sound like there is air moving through it though.

I hope this helps somebody come up with an idea about this.

Thank you very much for your study! I think you noise level is "normal", Arduino board has its limitations and I have been digging in the DUE forums, are there are people reporting similar issues.
Your analysis is great!!!

I also have the same problem. The pedal effects work relatively well and I am really happy with the build and the whole process. But the noise is an issue that is too noticeable when playing. I will keep looking for help on cleaning up the signal. Any advice is much appreciated. :P
