Guitar pedal modification - pedalSHIELD for Bass

8 años 10 meses antes #315 por DowneyB0
Hi there I am wondering how could you modify the Arduino Pedalshield guitar pedal to be used with a bass guitar. There is a comment on the pedalshield page saying
"Is pedalSHIELD suitable for bass players?

Yes, but you need to swap 6 capacitors (C1 C4 C6 C7 C10 C11) from 0.1uF to 0.5uF, that is all"

I am wondering is this all you would need to do? What would happen if you plugged in a bass into the guitar pedal?

Also what the modifications could you add onto the pedal to change or alternate the design as an experiment?

Yes, you can use pedalSHIELD with a base guitar by changing (C1 C4 C6 C7 C10 C11) from 0.1uF to 0.5uF (0.47nF), they change the high pass filters allowing more low harmonics to to through the pedal, the rest of the pedal will work the same.

In the current design there are several high pass filters that attenuate the excess of bass. The cut frequency is defined by R= 100K and C=100nF and freqs below 15.9 Hz are attenuated.

Using R=100K and C= 470nF only freqs below 4Hz get attenuation, you can use any onlnie high pass filter calculator to make the numbers.

Any film/ceramic cap will do,take care cause they tend to be a bit bulky... you can check this from mouser: SR215E474MAR

Also what the modifications could you add onto the pedal to change or alternate the design as an experiment?

The MXR Micro Amp (and MXR Distortion+) are not far from the input stage circuit. I am sure you can modify the pedal to be fully analogue and sound like one of those.

Thanks for the reply. I am now going to try and do the capacitor swap. It should be relatively simple. But I cannot seem to find any suitable capacitors that aren't very overpriced or wrong capacitance. Any ideas where to acquire the correct capacitors. I am surprised it is so hard to find these.

Thanks

I have used the 0.47uF Panasonic ECQ-V1H474JL they are around 0.3€ (0.15 buying more than 10) in mouser.

You can check this tread in the forum:

Sourcing cheap caps sometimes is difficult but you should not pay more than 0.2€ for each one. Look in Mouser and Farnell (they have free delivery if you reach an amount) and you always have ebay, tayda elctronics, and similar pages.
