Little Gem amp-polarised & non-polarised capacitor

Hi,

I have a question/problem about the littel gem amp (I couldn't find a category that would fit the issues this forum. Sorry if I missed how to file it properly..)

Anyhow, I tried to built the little gem circuit today, and I realised that I got a POLARISED capacitor of 100u instead the NON-polarised capactior of 100u that is shown in the schematics. (capacitor C1 ins the schematics in www.electrosmash.com/little-gem-analysis)
I tried to build it nonetheless, linking the anode to the input volt and the cathode to ground. But... no luck, no sound coming out at all. I measure voltage across the circuit so that seems to be ok. Could it be the wrong capacitor type that messes things up? Or is it OK to replace C1 with a polarised capacitor, and I need to search for the problem elsewhere?
I also tried without that capacitor at all to see what that does, but no luck either.

I'm very much a beginner, so I hope my question makes sense.

Thank you to anyone who would take the time to enlighten me!
